AJE August Component of the Month Design Challenge Reveal

Every month Art Jewelry Elements hosts a design challenge. For the month of August, Diana Ptaszynski challenged participants to design something using a pendant sized rustic coin. I've made a couple pairs of earrings in the past with the charm size coins, and even created an easy earring tutorial with them.

I just love the aged crunchy look of these things. So even though I was out of town for about half of August, then dealing with the insanity of getting myself and the kids ready and off to school, I needed to participate.

I received one of the tan glazed coins. I wanted to keep things simple. For challenges, I sometimes go a bit crazy and end up frustrated and disgruntled. I think I kept it simple, but still ended up frustrated as things kept going awry. Here is the final result.

I decided at the last second to make it a lariat. I'm still not sure I'm happy with the final design, but it's going to stay like this for now.

The copper piece I bent into a bail and the copper charm hanging from the loose end are both made by Kristi Bowman.

Now go take a look at what everyone else created with their rustic coin pendants:

I actually think the lariat idea is really cool! I'd never thought to use one for that! Great job, especially considering your time constraints!

I really love the rustic feel of your piece, and I love how you brought color in with your headpins.

Gorgeous and really unusual! I love the little pops of colour from your headpins and the lariat idea is very cool!

I think a lariat was great idea. It really worked well with the pendant. Excellent job!

What a beautiful piece! I love how you have used your lampwork headpins and Kristi's components, just beautiful!

I have never made a lariat. And then I see this and think its so cool. Easy to wear, marries form and function! Well played, Jen. Well played. Kristin's copper pieces are great as the bail thing. Very creative.

Something very eye catching about this that draws your eye from head pin around to the other one...very clever and effective design and I like it a lot.10725

I think making a lariat with that component is such a cool idea! Inspired, even. I really like the colors and textures of this piece, too. Lovely work! :)

I loved your earrings with the "aged and crunchy" charms. Like you, I tend to get into overly-complicated stuff for these challenges and struggled to keep this one simple. You rocked simple with your lariat. I've never made one of those; it never occurred to me. The donut shape lends itself perfectly to this design. Loved the use of Kristi's components. Very clever piece!

I know you are frustrated but girl I love it!
